From action sports to intimate portraits, photographing people in the outdoor landscape can present a variety of challenges and rewards. Tom Bol has built his career photographing adventure sports and environmental portraits in remote locations that present unique challenges in getting a quality image. During this workshop, Tom will not only discuss basic concepts but also techniques to capture fresh perspectives and unique angles for dramatic images. Learn how to create studio lighting in the field for portraits using only minimal gear. The Wasatch Mountains surrounding Sundance offer excellent locations and activities for photography. Workshop topics include composition, exposure, environmental portraits, point of view techniques, off camera TTL flash, reflector use and digital workflow. We also will spend a memorable night of light painting and star trail photography. Biography Tom Bol is a freelance photographer based in Fort Collins, Colorado. Due to his passion for outdoor photography, Tom’s assignments have ranged from photographing Himalayan climbing expeditions to documenting a two month sea kayaking trip in Patagonia. Tom seems to find himself photographing interesting, precarious angles, including the bottom of a crevasse on Mt. McKinley to a grizzly bear’s mouth (as it dragged his gear away). Past assignments have taken him to Central and South America, Europe, Asia and throughout the U.S. Most recently he photographed stories in Belize, Baja and Alaska. Tom regularly shoots editorial assignments for publications such as Men’s Journal, National Geographic Adventure, Paddler, Runners World, Sunset and the Wall Street Journal. He is a contributing editor at Canoe and Kayak magazine, traveling the globe each year photographing stories. National Geographic Adventure listed Tom as one of America’s top 50 visionaries for his photography. Nikon has featured his work in Nikon World Magazine, as well as in their product catalogs and at tradeshows. In addition to his editorial work, Tom photographs a wide variety of commercial assignments from fashion lines for Columbia Sportswear to tourism images for visitor bureaus. Tom’s images are marketed worldwide by seven different stock agencies including Aurora Photos and Getty Images. Tom has been teaching workshops for over 15 years, and is known for his dynamic teaching style and boundless enthusiasm, both during the day and at night!
