Spirit of Place: The Essence of Travel PhotographyNovember 6 - 10, 2006 Bob Krist
This workshop is for advanced amateurs and experienced professionals who want to gain insight into how to make better photographs for editorial, stock sales, or for personal satisfaction. You will photograph the Sundance area at one of the most beautiful times of the year. Bob will cover many aspects of a travel shoot: how to solve technical problems, how to work with people, gain access, digital workflow on the road, and how to use a small strobe. You will learn how to research a story, select a destination, prepare a shooting list, edit your pictures and determine ways to share your work with a larger community. Bob will work with students in critique sessions, sharing his work and techniques. Students will work in digital and are expected to have basic digital photography skills — image capture, downloading, editing, etc. — and are encouraged to research the area before arrival. Biography Bob's books include In Tuscany (Broadway Books, NY), which features 270 pages of his photographs of the region and is a collaboration with author Frances Mayes. It spent a month on the New York Times bestseller list. He also photographed the coffeetable books Caribbean and Portrait of the Caribbean and Low Country: Charleston to Savannah (Graphic Arts Center Publishing) , A Photo Tour of New York (Photo Secrets Publishing, San Diego), and Impressions of Bucks County (Old Mill Productions, New Hope PA). An accomplished writer as well as a photographer, Bob is a contributing editor at both National Geographic Traveler and Outdoor Photographer, where he writes a travel photography column. His how-to book Spirit of Place: The Art of The Traveling Photographer (Amphoto Books, NY) was hailed by American Photographer magazine as "the best book about travel photography we've ever read." He lectures in Washington DC as part of the ongoing "Live at the National Geographic" series. He teaches photo workshops for the Maine and Santa Fe Photo Workshops, National Geographic Expeditions, Linblad Expeditions and the Olympic Mountain School of Photography. A former professional actor, Bob hosted Nature's Best Photography, a 13-part series for National Wildlife Productions on the Outdoor Life Network, and Photography Close Up, one of Cablevision's "MagRack" series. Starting in May 2005, he will host the PBS special Restoration Stories. Bob lives in New Hope, Pennsylvania, with his wife Peggy and their three sons.
